Lymphopenia
Lymphopenia (also called lymphocytopenia) is a condition in which the blood has a lower-than-normal number of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. [1]
Laboratory definition
Lymphopenia is commonly diagnosed when the absolute lymphocyte count is below the laboratory’s reference range. [1] Lymphopenia for adults is often defined as fewer than 1,500 lymphocytes per microliter of blood. [1]
Clinical significance
A low lymphocyte count can increase susceptibility to infections. [2]
Common causes
Lymphopenia can be seen after viral infections, with immunosuppressive medications (including corticosteroids), and with certain diseases that affect the immune system. [3]
