Oral Rehydration Solution Dosing for a 6-Month-Old With Dehydration
Oral rehydration solution (ORS), including Pedialyte, is recommended for mild-to-moderate dehydration using weight-based volume replacement. ORS should be administered as 50–100 mL/kg over 2–4 hours, with additional ORS for ongoing losses. [1]
Medication Selection Algorithm
Pedialyte should be used as a pre-mixed ORS product for oral rehydration. [2]
Treatment Initiation Thresholds
ORS administration is used for mild-to-moderate dehydration due to diarrheal illness when the infant can take oral fluids. [1]
Recommended Pedialyte Dose
- Rehydration (replace estimated fluid deficit): 50–100 mL/kg PO over 2–4 hours. [1]
- Administration method when vomiting or poor tolerance: small, frequent amounts should be used, such as starting with 5 mL every 5 minutes and gradually increasing as tolerated. [3]
Ongoing Loss Replacement
Additional ORS should be given to replace ongoing fluid losses during the rehydration period. [1]
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Using excessive single bolus volumes early in therapy should be avoided when vomiting is present. [3]
- Delaying re-evaluation after the initial 2–4 hour rehydration period should be avoided because reassessment is part of standard rehydration protocols. [1]
When to Seek Emergency Care
Immediate medical care is recommended for severe dehydration or inability to maintain oral intake. [1]
